About
A quiz game where you type the answer yourself.
What it is
A quiz game that works on phone, tablet and computer, built to be played with other people β in the same room or apart. It runs in the browser, so there is nothing to download. It is free, it needs no account to try, and it takes under a minute to get going.
How to play
Create a room, share the code with the people you want to play with, and start the round. Everyone gets the same question at the same time and types an answer. When time is up, the solution, the points and the standings appear β then the next question.
Ways to play
- Room with friends β everyone answers at once, with the solution and points between questions
- Hint mode β the letters of the solution appear as time runs, and the sooner you answer correctly, the more points you get
- Daily quiz β the same cards for everyone, one round a day
- Quiz rush β as many cards as you can manage, with three lives
- Quiz battle β rush against an opponent at your own level
- Quiz challenge β the same cards as your friends, played whenever it suits
- Countries and mixes β play cards about one particular country, or mix several categories in the same round
Why you type the answer
Four options let you guess your way to the right answer. Typing it means you actually have to know it. The judge accepts the solution, common variants and typos β but not vague approximations. If you think an answer was judged wrongly, you can dispute it, and the others in the room decide.
The questions
Every card is made and checked before the game starts, with AI assistance in writing and cross-checking, and nothing is generated while you play. Each card has a category and a difficulty, and most exist in Norwegian, English, Swedish, Danish, German and Dutch β so two players in the same room can read the same question in different languages. Spot a mistake, tell us from the solution screen and we will fix it.
Who makes it
Trivvy is made by Espen Solhaug and Espen Faugstad in Norway. If you have suggestions, questions or something that does not work, we would like to hear from you.
The service is run jointly by Solhaug Helse og Utdanning (company number 928 777 030) and Utdannet. No Espen Faugstad (company number 999 033 237), Norway. You can reach us at hey@trivvy.net.
Why Trivvy exists
Trivvy started with a teacher who had grown tired of Kahoot and similar quiz tools. Espen Solhaug is a teacher, and in a multiple-choice quiz you have a 25, 33 or 50 per cent chance (four, three or two options) of guessing the right answer without knowing anything. Trivvy is built around a different idea: you type the answer yourself instead of choosing between options, so the score says something about what you actually know. Everyone in a room gets the same question at the same moment, and the judge accepts typos and common variants, so you are tested on knowing the answer and not on spelling it.
Espen Solhaug teaches tourism, among other subjects, and spent many hours in the car with his pupils. They found no good trivia site and few formats that were fun. Together with Espen Faugstad, who runs the course portal utdannet.no, he made Trivvy. That is why there are several ways to play, so that different kinds of quiz players get something they like: a room where friends answer at the same time, the daily quiz, Quiz rush with three lives, Quiz battle against an opponent, Quiz challenge that can be played whenever it suits, and 30 questions at your own pace without a clock, made for long car rides.
We want a quiz that is quick to start, works on whatever device you have, and does not need an account or a download. That is why Trivvy runs in the browser, and why you can play as a guest with a nickname.
The formats
Trivvy has formats for different kinds of quiz players: rooms with friends (with an optional hint mode), Trivvy Live every half hour, Quiz battle, Quiz challenge, Quiz grid for two to four players, the family game, the daily quiz, Quiz rush, 30 questions, the Daily 4x4, the seasonal quizzes and a level test. The rules, times and points for each are explained in our guide to Trivvy game formats.
How the questions are made and checked
Every question is a card made and checked before the game starts, with AI assistance in writing and cross-checking the cards. Nothing is generated while you play. A card has a category, a difficulty, a solution and a list of accepted variants such as a surname alone or a number written as a word. Many cards exist in several languages, and questions about a single country are written in that country's language.
New cards go through automated checks for format, translations and duplicates, and an independent check of the facts. Existing cards are then reviewed category by category, and each reviewed card gets the date of the review. The rules a question has to follow are the ones described in our guide to how we check our questions: one clear answer, a fact that stays true, and no dependence on a definition people argue about.
What the AI does, and does not do
Your typed answer is first compared with the solution and its variants by fixed rules. Only when the rules cannot decide does a language model look at whether your answer means the same as the solution. It never decides what the right answer is. If you think a judgement was wrong, you can dispute it in a room, and the other players vote.
Our principles
A wrong answer in a quiz is worse than a missing one, so a doubtful question is rewritten or replaced rather than left as it is. We do not hide mistakes: a card that is found to be wrong is corrected in the card itself, so it is fixed for everyone. We do not publish questions and solutions on open pages in a way that lets anyone look them up in advance. And we do not make claims about what Trivvy does for your brain that we cannot stand behind.
How Trivvy is paid for
Trivvy is free to play. It is paid for by ads, which are shown in the breaks, for example while you wait for the others or look at the solution, and not while you are typing your answer. No ads are shown in a family game where a child is playing.
